At UPMA, we serve our members and the community in Uganda and beyond.
As the national representative organization for private midwives in Uganda, UPMA is the dedicated champion in advocating for an increase in demand for, and fair access to midwifery services. We work to increase both the visibility and credibility of the midwife in Uganda on the local and international level.
Working together with trusted partners, UPMA is able to connect her members to donor-funded projects in adolescent health, maternal and child health and HIV/AIDS prevention and management of care; health and immunization campaigns and voucher programs. UPMA also provides members with platforms for information and research sharing with numerous organizations, to address the SDG’s.
We are advocates of a strong mentorship system that serves as a base for midwives to share information, experiences and evidence-based solutions, which will improve the safety and quality of their care. Through this system, members can even develop group research projects and advance innovations.
In its many forms, this includes the offer of subsidized purchases to member midwives of equipment, drugs and other necessities to improve the functioning of their facilities.
The International Day of the Midwife is globally recognized and celebrated on May 5. In Uganda, UPMA commemorates this day with a themed event that brings together midwives, partners and other stakeholders, to motivate, network and share.
Started in 1983 with membership of 50 midwives, this society has 140 members to-date who save together and lend to each other for the purchase of medicines and medical equipment for their practices.
UPMA supports capacity building and development of midwives to enhance the provision of safe and quality midwifery care through access to profession specific education programs that build their clinical skills, as well as trainings that build competence in finance and business management.
