The Uganda Private Midwives Association (UPMA) is a professional non-governmental organization of private practicing midwives in Uganda. It was founded in Kampala in 1948 by 12 retired enrolled midwives; to represent, advocate for, and support the independent midwife in her work to advance the well-being of women, their newborns and families, at the community level.
Our member midwives have a minimum of 5 years experience working in big healthcare institutions, and each offers Reproductive Health Care (RHC) services in private individual maternity homes, in communities across the country. They are committed to achieving excellence in providing primary health care to women throughout their lifespan, with special focus on pregnancy, childbirth and reproductive health.
As of 2019, UPMA has a national membership network of 714 private midwives. Through its 14 branches nationwide, UPMA supports its members through continued professional development to advance clinical excellence, research and advocacy that seeks to establish midwifery as the standard of care for women in Uganda. UPMA is governed by a National Executive Committee and Board of Directors. These develop future policies and define the strategic objectives and direction of the organization that are then executed by 9 employees (currently) working at the UPMA secretariat in Mengo, Kampala.
